ABOUT US

Alvarez, Cantón y Peters is a law firm established in 1943. The founding associates are the attorneys Miguel Cantón Möller and Raúl Alvarez Gutiérrez, both of whom have prestigious professional and academic careers both in Mexico and abroad. The firm is comprised by professionals who specialize in labor-related matters and have ample experience in the field of labor law.

The founding associates are members of the commission for Public Law of the Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística (Mexican Geographical and Statistical Society). The lawyers of the firm are active members of the Academia Mexicana de Derecho Procesal del Trabajo (Mexican Academy of Procedural Labor Law) and the Academia Latinoamericana de Derecho Procesal del Trabajo (Latin American Academy of Procedural Labor Law), which were presided by Miguel Cantón Möller since they were established and until May, 2001. In addition, some of the lawyers are members of the Asociación Iberoamericana de Derecho del Trabajo (Iberoamerican Association of Labor Law), members of the Barra Mexicana, Colegio de Abogados, A.C. (Mexican Bar, College of Advocates) and professors of Labor Law at the law schools of important universities in Mexico City.

Thus, the members of our firm are active participants in the academic circles related to labor law and have ample practical, professional experience in this field, enabling our firm to efficiently fulfill the growing needs of companies connected with the complex and fundamental topic of employer-employee relations.

The legal advice that during the past years our firm has successfully provided to public and private, national and foreign companies in the industrial, commercial and service sectors has made us an essential and reliable aid for the proper legal management of human resources. Our mission is to solve the problems that often arise between employees and employers as favorably and efficiently as possible for the company. Our intervention is basically two-phased; the first phase is preventive, the second phase is contentious. The first phase involves the theoretical or substantive aspect of law, while the second phase has to do with the practical or adjective practice of law.

Briefly, the preventive phase involves providing the company with all the technical support required to avoid, as far as possible, future lawsuits, summons, fines or audits brought or imposed by the labor authorities. Our task is to put the company’s human resources department in order, so that it is in the best position to respond to any of the often frequent eventualities. The second phase involves contention. In case of an eventuality, the firm attends all labor disputes brought before any competent authority, whether it be for conciliation or arbitration. The firm applies its entire procedural potential to these matters in which, perhaps more than in any other field, experience is essential.

In addition to attending individual labor-related matters, our firm specializes in settling difficult collective matters. This activity not only requires a profound knowledge of the law but also good negotiating skills, so as to protect the interests of the company. In other words, the firm intervenes directly, on behalf of the company, in matters of collective bargaining and hiring, claims for title to collective contracts, and strike calls.

The firm has a large and growing portfolio of clients that includes companies in both the industrial and service sectors. The firm has offices in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancun. Soon an office at Monterrey will be opened. The following is a directory of the lawyers who represent our firm. The directory includes a brief description of their academic background and their professional experience in the field of labor law.
